Hoppers Crossing driver six times over limit

POLICE say they are “staggered” a Hoppers Crossing woman who blew more than six times the legal limit was able to put the keys in her car’s ignition, let alone drive.

The woman, 52, was caught on Hogans Road at 9.10am on Friday after two other motorists alerted police to a car being driven erratically. The motorists told police the woman was driving all over the road and was having difficulty turning corners, before mounting a kerb and stopping.

Police took the woman to hospital where they said an evidentiary breath test showed a reading of .32.

Leading Senior Constable David Cations said he was surprised by the reading given the time of the day and the woman’s age. “In 25 years on the job, that is the highest breath reading I’ve come across,” he said. ‘‘I’m staggered she could put the keys in the ignition, let alone drive the car.”

Senior Constable Cations said while the woman travelled less than one kilometre after police were alerted to her erratic driving, she was a danger to the public.

“No way should this woman have been driving; it was just an accident waiting to happen,” he said.

“Who knows what would have happened if these two drivers hadn’t alerted police to her driving. We are very fortunate no one was injured.”

The woman’s licence was suspended and she will be charged on summons to face court at a later date.
