WERRIBEE Football Club continues to strengthen its ties with the local multicultural community, receiving $50,000 in funding to support a project dubbed Wyndham Sporting Opportunities.
The project is aimed at boosting sports and recreational opportunities for young migrants in Wyndham, allowing them to make new friends and gain a sense of belonging.
Funded through the federal government’s Diversity and Social Cohesion Program, the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities project will work in partnership with the Centre for Multicultural Youth to bring together migrant young people and local sports clubs.
Werribee FC general manager Mark Penaluna said the club was excited about the program. “We saw something in the community that was potentially a bit lacking,” he said. “This is a way we can assimilate people from diverse backgrounds into local clubs. We’ll look at where we can draw out opportunities in local netball, basketball, cricket and footy clubs … and see how we can help out.”
