Werribee driver steals car, outstrips police

A WERRIBEE man is facing court in NSW after he was accused of leading police on three high-speed chases in a stolen car, which resulted in a police car being written off.

Raymond Gottschack, 28, was arrested in Gundagai on July 15 and has been charged with two counts of police pursuit and one count each of not stopping a vehicle when directed, unlicensed driving and receiving property stolen outside  of NSW.

Wagga police allege he fled from police at high speed after he was spotted driving a stolen car at Mullengandra about 7.30am last Monday. The chase lasted five minutes before it was called off when speeds reached 176km/h.

A second police pursuit started at 7.58am and lasted four minutes.

Police allege the man’s car reached speeds of 195km/h. A third pursuit took place on the outskirts of Tarcutta about 8.05am but was called off after five minutes.

Police said they spotted the car in Gundagai about 30 minutes later.  The police car that started giving chase crashed into a railing and then a truck. The car was written off, but the driver escaped injury.

Gottschack was arrested after he was spotted walking in Gundagai.  He did not apply for bail when facing Wagga Local Court last Thursday and has been remanded until August 5.

A Sunshine boy, 16, who was a passenger in the car, was charged with receiving stolen property and being carried in a stolen vehicle.
