GROWTH in Wyndham will be capped at 3000 houses a year under a council plan to address infrastructure backlogs.
The council unveiled the plan on Monday night, saying it needed to carefully manage the city’s growth to prevent pockets of disadvantage being created.
It said limiting growth to 3000 houses a year would allow roads to be duplicated, schools, community centres and sports facilities to be built, and bus routes created as residents move into the municipality.
Currently, about 5000 houses are built in Wyndham each year. In 2010-11, the city’s population grew by more than 12,000 people. The council’s plan also calls for future land releases to be conditional on infrastructure being delivered and the creation of local jobs.
It estimates that 55 per cent of residents work outside the municipality.
Councillor Peter Maynard said Wyndham’s growth rate needed to be steady, rather than rapid. “This report related to concerns the council has about [precinct structure plans] being developed.’’
