WERRIBEE Football Club wants Wyndham council to lock the gates at Avalon Airport Oval after hours to prevent the club from being broken into and vandalised.
The VFL club has been burgled and vandalised 11 times in the past three years, with the most recent break-in on April 26.
In a submission to the council’s draft 2013-14 budget, Tigers chief executive Mark Penaluna said the council needed to review its gate policy because the break-ins were costing the club.
“This year we have been the victim of vandalism and theft, with the total amount of stolen goods amounting to somewhere near $5000,’’ he said.
‘‘In previous years we have had a club vehicle burnt out, numerous amounts of stolen goods and continual victims of damage – such as broken locks, graffiti and broken glass. It’s quite disturbing when you put so much back into the community as we do, and as other sporting clubs do, to get robbed.”
The club also asked the council to improve disability access at the oval by installing a lift.
Penaluna urged councillors and staff to visit the oval to assess the club’s needs.
