WITH demolition under way, all that remains of Wyndham’s only public indoor swimming pool is the roof and its supports.
Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre is being redeveloped by the council at a cost of $45 million.
Builders are concentrating on removing the old pools, leaving massive holes in the ground.
They will be replaced by a new 50-metre concrete pool with moveable boom, a warm water hydrotherapy pool with in-built spa, a four-lane learn-to-swim pool and a children’s water play centre.
Two of Victoria’s largest water slides will be added outside the centre. Behind the centre, work has started on a new car park for gym members. This will allow ADCO Constructions to redevelop the existing car park.
Mayor Heather Marcus said the redevelopment would deliver social, economic and health benefits to the city’s burgeoning population. “The community has outgrown the current Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre’s facilities,’’ she said.
“The expansion will provide our growing municipality with a state-of-the-art aquatics and events venue that will be a major landmark and source of pride for Wyndham.”
Construction is expected to take about 18 months.
