Rhino’s arrival in Werribee is heavy stuff

HE may have only been born last Thursday, but a rhino calf at Werribee Open Range Zoo already weighs as much as some humans.

Zoo staff are thrilled at the arrival of the yet-to-be-named 69-kilogram calf, born to mother Sisi.

Zoos Victoria says the birth of the male southern white rhinoceros is a sign of hope for the species, which has come under threat of extinction from illegal poaching in Africa.

Fewer than 20,150 southern white rhinos remain in the wild. The calf will soon be moved into the zoo’s rhino yard.
