Katrina’s stepping out to beat MS

KATRINA Minness has spent her teenage years watching her mum struggle to perform everyday tasks.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis eight years ago, Birgit, an administrative worker at Werribee’s St Andrews parish office, sometimes experiences so much pain in her legs that she finds it difficult to walk.

On Sunday, Ms Minness (pictured) will walk 10 kilometres in the MS Walk and Fun Run at Albert Park to raise awareness of MS and honour her mum’s fighting spirit.

“I worry what it will come to in the end. No two cases of MS are identical and the severity and progression of the condition can’t be predicted,” she said.

Ms Minness, who is in year 12 at MacKillop College, is taking part in the event with her brother Simon. Together they hope to raise awareness of the disease and raise money to help find a cure.

“MS is a lifelong disease for which a cause and cure are yet to be found. However, doctors and scientists are making discoveries about the treatment and management of MS every day,” Ms Minness said.

It’s estimated more than 23,000 Australians are living with MS, with 1000 people diagnosed every year. People are usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40.
