Back in the saddle for Werribee Park’s mane event

THE southern hemisphere’s oldest equestrian event will continue to be held at Werribee Park after the state government announced funding for this year’s event.

The government will contribute $35,000 to help Equestrian Victoria stage the Melbourne International Three-Day Event in June and the national showjumping championships in September.

Sports and Recreation Minister Hugh Delahunty said the events produced future equestrian stars. “These prestigious equestrian events provide the perfect platform for aspiring world champions to impress for national team selection and earn the ultimate honour to compete in future world championships and Olympics.”

He said Werribee Park was the ideal venue for the events, which include elite dressage, cross country and showjumping competitions.

The 56th Melbourne International Three-Day Event will host horses and riders from across Australia, including former Olympians.

The national championships, which were first staged by Equestrian Victoria last year, are expected to attract competitors from across Australia and New Zealand.

The championships determine three Australian champions — one for each of the senior, junior and young rider categories. There is also a trans-Tasman teams and a state teams competition. The event is a qualifier for riders to gain selection to the Australian team for the 2014 World Equestrian Games, which will be held in France.

Equestrian Victoria chief executive Greg Pratt said the funding would allow the organisation to maintain a high standard of competition.

The Melbourne International Three-Day Event is on June 8-10, with a community day on June 7. Tickets are available from Ticketek. The Australian Showjumping Championships are on September 19-22.
