Saving time and money on two wheels

THE car might still be king for Wyndham commuters, but Hoppers Crossing’s Chris Morris (pictured) is among a growing number of residents getting on their bikes to avoid the peak-hour crush.

Pedalling from Hoppers Crossing to work at either Werribee or Sunshine every day, Ms Morris says she’s consistently on time and stress-free.

“In Wyndham, the cars are banked up on arterial roads before they even get to the freeway and on a bike you just whiz past them,” she says.

“Riding to work means you get to keep fit, and you feel fantastic – you feel like you’re flying.”

Census data shows the number of Victorians who travel to work by bicycle only is low compared to other modes of transport.

But it has increased significantly, from almost 19,000 commuter riders in 2006 to more than 25,000 last year.

Ms Morris says she hopes a bike cage at the new Williams Landing train station will encourage more people to make the lifestyle change and cycle part of the way to work.

“It makes getting to work fun instead of being a hassle, and you save so much money.”
