Fostering was a life-changing decision

TRUGANINA’S Sam Harrison says being a foster carer to two teenage girls is like a guardian, mentor and friend in one.

She says opening her doors to create a family environment for young people in need was a life-changing decision.

“You get to have a really positive effect on the kids —it’s a two-way thing. I learn as much from them as they learn from me.”

Ms Harrison, a part-time TAFE teacher, says the girls, aged 16 and 17, would have been sent to residential care or temporary placements.

“There’s literally nowhere else for them to go.

“I provide a safe and happy living environment, I give them whatever support they need, and it’s awesome – the most positive thing I’ve ever done in my life.

“It gives them opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have.”
