PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has urged Wyndham Council to apply for a federal grant to install a public CCTV camera.
This follows police support for a camera to be installed in Werribee’s CBD.
The $40 million National Crime Prevention Fund finances surveillance camera systems or street lighting, and grants to non-profit youth mentoring and outreach programs.
Wyndham police made a case for a CCTV camera on the corner of Watton Street and Station Place last October when state funding was made available following the death of Brunswick’s Jill Meagher.
But the council believes CCTV had “mixed success” and “little effect” on perceptions of public safety. It is reviewing the need for more public cameras in Wyndham.
