A NEW set of planning guidelines have been introduced to safeguard Wyndham’s environmentally important areas from developers’ saws.
As Melbourne’s western limits stretch further each year, councillors last month voted to bring in the guidelines to ensure Wyndham was not viewed as a “blank canvas” for urbanisation.
Cr Peter Gibbons said Wyndham was rapidly changing and in danger of losing its character.
“The Werribee River, Lollipop Creek, Skeleton Creek, Black Forest Swamp, [and] Truganina hall and township are among the sites of significance listed in the guidelines which must be maintained for current and future generations,” Cr Gibbons said. “Protection and enhancement of our waterways, biodiversity sites and other features identified in the guidelines will improve the community’s appreciation and understanding of our natural environment.”
The code will guide the council, the Growth Areas Authority and developers when drafting plans.
