Wyndham drivers behaving badly over Easter

POLICE were disappointed with driver behaviour over Easter, with 85 drivers fined on Wyndham roads.

Operation Crossroads ran April 5-9, with police targeting excessive speed, fatigue, driver distraction and drug and drink-driving in a bid to reduce road trauma.

In Wyndham, 32 people were caught not wearing a seatbelt. Police also fined 12 people for using a mobile phone behind the wheel.

Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said it was disappointing many drivers ignored safety warnings.

“All road users . . . have a responsibility to think about how they’re going to travel safely on the road network. We have 5500 people injured on our roads each year.

“The large majority of road users do the right thing, but it’s the minority who continue to let us down.”

Wyndham police also detected 18 unlicensed drivers and 18 people driving unregistered vehicles.

Police carried out 2799 random breath-tests, with five drivers caught over the legal limit.

Assistant Commissioner Hill said he did not understand why people continued to think they could drink and drive.

“They are the people who are causing the collisions and are a risk to us all.” Police also issued fines and impounded cars for speeding.

A Wyndham Vale man, 18, had his car impounded for 28 days after he was nabbed travelling along Ballan Road at 154km/h. He will be charged on summons with excessive speeding.
