Tarneit mosque to be ‘vibrant, social hub’

CONSTRUCTION of a mosque will begin in Tarneit later this year.

Wyndham Council approved the $6 million Wootten Road site development in July 2011 following an application for a place of worship and community facility by the Werribee Islamic Centre.

The development is now in the hands of a private building surveyor, who will review plans before issuing a building permit, allowing construction to begin.

As reported by the Weekly, the complex will comprise a mosque, community centre, library, childcare centre, kindergarten, function hall and undertaker. It will also include an indoor sports stadium and pool and will be built opposite the Islamic College of Melbourne.

Werribee Islamic Centre president Mohamed Masood said plans for the new mosque were on track.

Mr Masood hoped the development would help address some of Wyndham’s infrastructure shortfalls.

“We want it to be a vibrant, social hub,” he said.

Mr Masood said the Islamic centre needed a new home because it had outgrown its Hogans Road mosque.

He said many people were forced to stand outside during Friday prayers and other large gatherings.
