WYNDHAM came alive on the weekend, with thousands flocking to this year’s Weerama Festival.

In its 35th year, the festival showcased the municipality’s many cultures and varied talents.

The highlight of the event was the traditional street parade on Sunday morning.

Festival director Warrick Lynch said about 10,000 people packed Watton Street to watch the parade, which featured school groups, dancers, cheerleaders, community organisations and football players. Sunday also featured a youth talent competition and multicultural fiesta, which included performances from cultural groups.

On Saturday, festival-goers were kept busy at a children’s festival and classic car show before later being treated to a fireworks display at Chirnside Park.

Mr Lynch said everyone seemed very happy with this year’s program. “It went really well. We don’t have official numbers yet but we had a big turnout. The street was very busy.

“Everyone loved the fireworks. You could hear the cheers from Watton Street.”
