Man bailed over stab death of Werribee man

INVESTIGATIONS continue into the stabbing death of a Werribee man in Fitzroy.

The man, 21, died after being stabbed multiple times on Sunday morning. His name has not been released.

He was discovered in Johnston Street by a council worker about 5am. He collapsed soon after and died before an ambulance arrived.

Police arrested and charged a Sydenham man, 21, on Monday after stopping a vehicle in which he was travelling in Joy Street, Brooklyn, about 12.50am.

The man was charged with one count of affray and bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court next week.

Two Brooklyn men, 21 and 30, were also arrested but released without charge.

Police said the vehicle was undergoing forensic testing.

Detectives arrested another man, a 29-year-old from Brunswick West, on Sunday afternoon. He was interviewed and released without charge.

Police said four women went to Melbourne North police station yesterday morning and were helping police.

On Sunday, Detective Sergeant Allan Birch said the investigation had been hampered due to the early mystery around the man’s identity.

“We don’t know who was involved and we don’t know exactly how the injuries were inflicted. Because of that our investigation is extremely wide.”

Detective Birch said police hoped anyone who may have been in the area about 5am on Sunday would come forward.

“Having regard to its almost inner city location, I would think there would have been people moving about, about 5am [Sunday] morning, and that they would come forward and help us solve what actually happened.”
