Werribee Park garden aids growth

A GROUP of Karen women are working to maintain Werribee Park’s historical kitchen garden.

The women have worked with Parks Victoria for 18 months to re-establish the garden and were asked to prepare a traditional Burmese meal for Multicultural Affairs Minister Nicholas Kotsiras during his visit last week.

The women, including Mu Mu (pictured) harvested herbs and vegetables from the garden to use in the meal.

Mr Kotsiras said the garden was proving to be a fertile ground for refugees to learn life and work skills.

He said the women had developed language and horticulture skills which enabled many to find internships and employment with groups such as the Brotherhood of St Laurence.
