STUDENTS at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College are about to learn what it’s like to work in the building industry.
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning students have been chosen to help plan, design and build a toddler’s playground at Truganina’s Forsyth Park.
Forsyth Park development manager Sean Hogan chose them to be involved in the project, which will be part of a one-hectare park and cafe precinct.
Students will look at best-practice designs from around Australia before planning, designing and choosing the equipment for their playground.
They have also been asked to make a piece of equipment themselves using woodwork and carpentry skills.
VCAL co-ordinator Jessica Stone said the year-long project was one of the largest students had embarked on.
“The park project will provide students with insight into the planning and construction industries which is exactly what the VCAL program is designed to do.”
Mr Hogan said the project was a chance for students to get a taste of construction and design. “We will be treating the students as we would any other contractors.
“We think it will be pretty special for these students to look back in 20 years’ time and still see their creation standing.”
