MUSICAL comedy trio Tripod are trying to come to terms with the realisation that they’ve grown up.
In their new show, Men of Substance, Scod (Scott Edgar), Yon (Simon Hall) and Gatesy (Steven Gates) tackle the issue of getting older.
Gatesy says the show is an attempt by the band to come to terms with the fact they all turn 40 this year, while trying to hold onto their silliness.
He says the trio discovered they were becoming more mature and mellow during a beach house band camp.
“We discovered over this weekend that the songs we were writing were very particular to us as grown-ups.
“As kids we would reference Star Wars and things outside our lives, but we found that now we were mainly starting to write about things that were personal to us.”
Gatesy says “dad humour” has made its way into the show but warns it’s more “dads say the darndest things” than simply bad dad jokes. Scod and Yon recently became fathers.
“It’s about the idea that loud music is becoming annoying to us and we would say, let’s go to a Day on the Green because the access to toilets is good there – things like that,” Gatesy says. “We have a song about tax . . . that’s a sign we’re grown-ups.”
Despite the new show having ‘mature influences’, Gatesy promises it is one of their best yet.
Tripod performs at the Wyndham Cultural Centre on March 2. Bookings: 8734 6000.
