MOTORISTS are being urged to obey reduced speed limits and look out for children as they head back to school.
School speed zones are back in action this week, with limits reduced to 40km/h from 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm.
Drivers are also being asked to obey parking restrictions around schools and bus stops.
Roadsafe Westgate member Cr Peter Gibbons said drivers needed to remain alert around schools. “Children can behave unpredictably around roads and, because they are small, can be harder to see.”
Crossing supervisor Judith O’Keefe has been helping children cross the road since 1985.
She said motorists needed to be aware of school zones and increased traffic.
“There is a lot more traffic on the road these days so it can be difficult to spot children.”
Ms O’Keefe, who mans a crossing on Ballan Road in Wyndham Vale, said most drivers did the right thing and obeyed her stop sign.
“I’ve never had any drivers that don’t stop when I go out onto the crossing.”
