Man on hit-run charge

A Hoppers Crossing man has been charged after a hit-run incident in Werribee on Australia Day in which a Point Cook man, 27, was struck by a car while crossing Synnot Street about 4am. He was taken to The Alfred hospital and released that afternoon. Police charged the Hoppers Crossing man, 27, with failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to render assistance. He was bailed to appear at Werribee Magistrates Court on April 29. A Werribee man, 23, was also interviewed by police and released pending further inquiries.

Motorcyclist dies

A motorcyclist has died after hitting a power pole at Hoppers Crossing. The Hoppers Crossing man, 44, was travelling along Virgilia Drive about 4.35pm on Saturday when he lost control on a bend at the intersection of Bottlebrush Drive. Paramedics were called but he died at the scene. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Paramedic awarded

A Hoppers Crossing paramedic’s dedication to helping others has been recognised with an Ambulance Service Medal. Jon Byrne received the Australia Day honour for a career spanning 28 years. Health Minister David Davis said Mr Byrne played an essential role in the emergency response to heatwaves in 2009, the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 and floods in 2010-11 and 2012.

Keeping Wyndham tidy

A plan to tidy up Wyndham’s most-littered roadsides has received a $45,000 Sustainability Victoria grant. An 18-month ‘Litter Loves Bins Not Roadsides’ campaign will encourage residents to report people throwing litter from vehicles and remind people to use public bins.
