Hitting dance heights

Experienced teacher, adjudicator and principal of That Dance Place in Hoppers Crossing, Lisa George, believes many people carry a stereotypical picture of how a dancer should be but her school is all about changing that perception.

“One of my students didn’t have the ‘right’ build for a dancer, but through sheer determination and passion for dance she overcame all obstacles, defying the expressed notion that she wouldn’t succeed. She went on to work internationally and at most of the leading schools in Melbourne as a lecturer.

“If you work at something and believe in yourself, anything is possible,” explains Lisa.

Classes include jazz, tap, classical ballet, singing, contemporary, boys only, stretch and hip-hop. Funky Feet jazz and creative dance for 30-month to five-year-olds are also on the program.

“The future of dance is so exciting, with styles evolving all the time. We’re also bringing in industry guest teachers to keep students up to date and give them a taste of professional dance needs that exist today. And we have plans in the pipeline — but they’re top secret!”

“Several students were accepted into the talent agency, MP Talent, and one — Kelsey Halge — received a full scholarship.

It’s great that other industry people are seeing the talent in my students.”
