‘Tis the season for violence calls

THE Women’s Domestic Violence Crisis Service is preparing for a spike in calls during the festive season.

Last December WDVCS handled 2249 calls from women needing help, and 446 calls from police seeking urgent accommodation for victims.

In January this year, 2522 women called the crisis service, while police referred 372 incidents.

Many more incidents go unreported.

Chief executive Janene Evans warned that women should always put their own safety and that of their children first. “No matter how much a woman wants to create an image and feeling of unity, her safety and that of her children is paramount because consequences are too often fatal.”
