Going ape for Yakini’s birthday

YAKINI the gorilla has celebrated his 13th birthday with a party in his pad at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Keepers helped the much-loved primate party by giving him some special birthday treats, like dried mango and paw paw, last Wednesday.

Yakini, half-brother Ganyeka and father Motaba moved into the new exhibit a year ago, following a move from Melbourne Zoo.

Yakini stole the hearts of Victorians after a difficult caesarean birth, which led to him being hand-raised by zoo keepers for nearly a year.

From tiny beginnings, he now weighs about 150 kilograms and within the next couple of years will develop into a silverback like his father.
