No silent night for Werribee Park carollers

THERE aren’t many people who know the second and third verses to most Christmas carols, but members of the Goss Community Choir are confident they know them off by heart.

The Truganina-based choir has spent countless hours learning lyrics and practising harmonies for carols ahead of next weekend’s Carols by Candlelight at Werribee Park.

Musical director Dene Menzel said members were excited after being chosen as the main choir for this year’s performance, having taken part in the event since 2010.

“It means we will be on stage all night and we will get to perform two of our own songs,” she said.

“We have got a great variety of songs to sing this year.”

The choir has been together since May 2009 and has 25 members in its Truganina branch, with another 25 singers comprising its Hallam group. Ms Menzel said the choir was made up of people who loved pop music.

“I wanted to arrange a choir that would sound unique and have fun. We love harmonies and arranging music.

“Anyone is welcome to join. We have sopranos, altos, tenors and bass singers.”

The choir will also take to the stage this Sunday to showcase the songs members have learnt this year. The recital at Derrimut Heath Primary School will include performances of musical theatre, pop and rock songs. To attend, call 0451 955 582. Carols by Candlelight is at Werribee Mansion from 8.30pm on December 8.
