Police raid flat, arrest man

POLICE have arrested a man over the death of Bacchus Marsh woman Sarah Cafferkey after her body was found in a Point Cook house.

A Bacchus Marsh man, 47, was arrested at a flat near the corner of Riversdale Road and Munro Street in Hawthorn yesterday.

About 30 heavily armed police from the special operations group stormed a flat in the quiet street about 12.30pm and arrested him.

Ms Cafferkey, 22, was last seen in Ross Street, Bacchus Marsh on November 9.

Detectives found her car in Maribyrnong six days later.

The homicide squad took over the investigation last week after it emerged that she had received threats from a man in the lead-up to her disappearance.

Ms Cafferkey’s body was found in a Point Cook house after the homicide squad executed a search warrant early on Sunday.

Detective Inspector Michael Roberts said police raided a house in Fongeo Drive in Point Cook’s Alamanda estate.

Police have not revealed how they linked the woman’s disappearance to the property.

A twilight vigil for Ms Cafferkey will be held at a park in front of the Alamanda estate, in Sneydes Road, tomorrow from 7.30pm.

Residents who laid flowers at the Fongeo Drive house yesterday said the community was “devastated”.

Police were questioning the Bacchus Marsh man when the Weekly went to print. No charges had been laid.

Police spokeswoman Kelly Yates said investigations continued.
