WYNDHAM residents are being urged to rethink their commute to work as part of a new VicRoads campaign aimed at easing peak hour congestion on Melbourne’s roads.
‘Unlock the Grid’ asks people to consider using public transport to get work, leaving home earlier or using different roads.
Commuters can enter details of their trip to work at unlockthegrid.com.au to generate a personal congestion score. They are then asked to consider how they can reduce their score and the length of time it takes them to get to work.

Road user services director Dean Zabrieszach said the campaign would eventually ease peak hour congestion.
“Unlock the Grid aims to show commuters that by all making a few small changes to our daily routine, together we can reduce peak hour traffic. We want to remind drivers that they are not stuck in traffic, they are traffic.”
Wyndham Transport Advisory Group chairman Jim Giddings said the campaign would not have any impact in the municipality because public transport was unreliable.
“People have lost confidence in the public transport system, so they try and go to work using their motor vehicle. More efficient and frequent bus services to train stations is the only way [to fix the problem].”
RACV roads and traffic manager Dave Jones said people living in Melbourne’s outer suburbs had no choice but to drive. ” . . . a failure of successive governments to provide adequate infrastructure has left them with overcrowded trains, train station car parks that are full and no other option than to drive into the CBD.”
