Figures add heft to White Ribbon Day campaign

REPORTS of family violence are on the rise in Wyndham, with more than 1500 incidents reported to police in the past year.

In 2010-11, 210 fewer reports were made, with 1326 incidents recorded.

Nationwide, one in three Australian women over the age of 15 has reported experiencing physical or sexual violence.

Wyndham Council hopes to help lower family violence rates by hosting a White Ribbon Day community lunch.

It will publicise the campaign against violence towards women and encourage men to swear they will never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence towards women.

Cr Shane Bourke, the city’s White Ribbon Day ambassador, said the lunch was a way for people to show support for the campaign.

“By attending the community lunch, people will not only be able to show their support for the campaign to eliminate violence against women, they can also hear first-hand advice and stories.

“By making a stand together, we can achieve much more and work towards eliminating violence against women altogether.”

The council’s previous involvement in White Ribbon Day has led to the creation of a family violence unit at Werribee Police Station and a family violence service at Werribee Magistrates Court. The lunch is from noon on Thursday, November 29, at Wayaperri House, 106 Duncans Road, Werribee.
