VSDCA: Ball swings Werribee’s way

WERRIBEE was victorious over Elsternwick in its first two-day game of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season at Chirnside Park on Saturday.

The Tigers successfully defended their score of 227, built on a century from Tim O’Brien seven days earlier, but wrapping up the points was no easy task for the home side.

Tigers secretary Chris Burton said it was a second day of momentum swings.

“It ebbed and flowed through the whole 80 overs,” he said.

“At one stage, Elsternwick were 5-160 with 24 overs to go. The game was in the balance.

“Then we were able to capture the advantage back late in the piece with some really good fielding, catching and bowling.

“We took 5-15 towards the end to wrap their innings up and win.”

The turning point in the day came in the form of a run-out inflicted by Stephen Plumridge, who caught the damaging Rohan O’Neill (36) short of his ground with a direct hit.

It was the first of two run-outs to lift the Tigers. “That virtually changed the landscape of the game,” Burton said.

“When that happened, it was the catalyst for the next four wickets that fell.”

Jonathan Burton (2-31), O’Brien (2-28) and Wade McCall (2-18) were the pick of the bowlers.

Elsternwick was bowled out for 181.
