TRANSPORT in Wyndham needs at least $1 billion in vital upgrades to keep up with population growth, according to the RACV.
Nineteen urgent road upgrades in Wyndham have been listed in a new growth areas transport blueprint released on Monday.
The report states Wyndham’s population of 161,000 is due to reach more than 340,000 by 2031.
To prevent worsening congestion, proposed upgrades include duplicating Point Cook, Palmers, Heaths, Sneydes, Dunnings, Tarneit, Derrimut, Leakes, Forsyth and Dohertys roads.
Other works include a $25 million extension of Forsyth Road between Leakes and Sayers roads in Truganina and $10 million for an interchange at Sneydes Road and the freeway.
The report recommends bringing the SmartBus service to Werribee to provide a north-south link to Brimbank and Hume.
RACV public transport manager Thanuja Gunatillake said Wyndham faced a challenge in managing limited road infrastructure. “Urgent upgrades to the arterial network are needed including duplications, safety improvements and provision for grade separation at railway crossings, otherwise growing traffic volumes will be detrimental to safety, amenity and accessibility.” —Nick Toscano
