Werribee in sites for  National Bird Week survey

Bird lovers have taken stock of Wyndham’s flock as part of the Werribee River Association’s National Bird Week surveys.

Armed with binoculars, five members spent a week collecting data and tallying results from sites in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing to scope which species of birds were most common.

In backyard environments six exotic species – including blackbirds, spotted doves, myna birds, sparrows, starlings and the song thrush – were spotted 76 times (44 per cent of all sightings).

The New Holland honeyeater (pictured), a bird that is aggressive towards other honeyeaters, was the most noticeable native bird in the survey. In river areas, native birds like cockatoos and rainbow lorikeets were more prominent.
