Wyndhamvale could not last the distance against last year’s runner-up Sunshine Kangaroos, sinking to a 48-point defeat in their Western Region Football League division 1 clash at Wyndhamvale South Oval on Saturday.

The Falcons were impressive in the first half, with their chasing, harassing and enterprising play making a strong impression.

Unfortunately, the young Falcons side could not maintain their high level of play in the second half.

Their 24-point half-time deficit was almost doubled to 45 by three-quarter time.

They at least managed to square up with three goals apiece in the fourth, but the horse had bolted.

Trent Donnon, Codey Guy and Kobe James were standouts for Wyndhamvale, while Tyler Tessari kicked two goals.

Wyndhamvale is bottom of the ladder with two losses to start the season.

The Falcons have a chance to change that when they visit Albion on Saturday.

Albion’s only victory came courtesy of a technicality after it was awarded the points from its round one loss to Caroline Springs after the Lakers exceeded the allowable points cap in that match.

At the opposite end of the ladder, Werribee Districts claimed top spot with a 73-point thrashing of Albion at Soldiers Reserve.

Chris Molivas (six goals) and Cameron Lee (five) were damaging in attack, combining for 11 goals.

Nick Buykx, Caleb Sullivan and Matt Dean were the others to impress for the Tigers.

Werribee Districts will travel to St Albans on Saturday for what is a mouth-watering contest on paper.

Hoppers Crossing was made to rue its slow start against five-time defending premier Deer Park at Hogans Road Reserve.

The Warriors trailed 50-2 at quarter-time, but fought back strongly in the remaining three quarters to out-score the visitors, but it was not enough to get the win.

Hoppers Crossing’s next assignment is a tough one away to Caroline Springs.

In division 2, Point Cook made it two-from-two since crossing from the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

Andrew Auciello booted five goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 31-point win over Newport Power at Bryan Martyn Oval.

Manor Lakes remains winless after two rounds. The Storm went down by 55 points to defending premiers North Footscray under lights at Howqua Reserve on Saturday night.

In division 3, Wyndham Suns emerged with a four-point victory over Point Cook Centrals in a thriller at Featherbrook Reserve.

Tarneit opened its account with a comfortable 41-point win over Laverton at Wootten Road Reserve.

Glen Orden fell short of a breakthrough win by 10 points against Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve.

At least the Hawks are proving to be competitive in their first season back in senior football after a 12-month absence, so a win could be just around the corner.

In the opening week of the WRFL women’s competition, Manor Lakes had a 240-point win over a scoreless North Sunshine at Howqua Reserve. Kellee McIntosh was the talk of the Storm after kicking an incredible 18 goals.

Tarneit went down by 31 points to Laverton at Wootten Road Reserve, while Point Cook Centrals were thrashed by Spotswood to the tune of 69 points.

Meanwhile, the WRFL’s new netball competition got under way on Friday night.

It was double delight for Point Cook with Point Cook Blue mauling Braybrook Black 62-7 and Point Cook Red edging out Glen Orden 39-36.

All games are played at VU Sports Stadium at the Whitten Oval on Friday nights.
