Wyndham’s title defence for the Big V women’s state championship has received a boost.

Wyndham announced last week it had signed versatile wing Sarah Bennett for next season.

Bennett is a product of the Canadian basketball system, playing her collegiate career with the Toronto Varsity Blues, where she averaged 12.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in her final year.

Bennett has also played in Europe with German-based Jena, where she averaged 12 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Wyndham coach Gerard Hillier said in the club’s announcement on social media that they were really happy to sign Bennett who they expect to give them flexibility with their rotations.

“We like to get out and run, shoot a high amount of threes,” he said. “Having an experienced undersized post who genuinely understands how to play her role well allows us to play our run n gun style.

“Not to mention Sarah’s ability to shoot the three-point shot, couple that with her vast experience and strong work ethic, we got ourselves a winner.”

Bennett is expected to land early February.

“I am super excited to join the squad and can’t wait to start playing, I am looking forward to helping the team bring home another championship” said Bennett said,

Meanwhile, Wyndham has announced Billy Akalo as its youth league women’s coach. Akalo takes on the role having been interim coach of the championship women’s side during their successful finals run.
