Wins for Werribee, Hoppers

Werribee started the second part of the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant, division 2, section 1 season on a winning note, while Hoppers also got its first win of the season.

While several other matches were affected by heat, the Bees were able to get the job done against Altona 2.

The Bees won 97 (16)-68 (2).

Mick O’Neil’s rink won 31-19, Robert Smith’s rink won 29-13 and Brendan Barker’s rink won 27-14.

It was a tough day for Robert Panton’s rink which lost 22-10.

The win was a big one for the Bees in the hunt for a top spot. The third-placed Bees are now just five points behind second-placed Altona.

Deer Park 2 is a further 15 points ahead.

Hoppers’ match against Melton 2 was one of the matches in that section that was affected by the heat.

The match was halted after 60 ends due to it being too hot. The temperature failed to drop in the next hour, meaning the match was called off.

As 60 ends had been played the match is considered to have been completed and the scores at that time stand.

Hoppers was up one shot at that point, giving it the win, 60 (15)-59 (3).

Vince Gerace’s rink was leading 19-17 and Mario Aquilina’s was leading 13-12. Scores were level in Greg Berry’s rink, while Steve Bartlett’s rink was down 18-16.

Hoppers remain on the bottom of the ladder.

In division 3, section 1, Palm Lake’s match with Deer Park 3 was cancelled due to the heat, while Werribee 2 lost to Williamstown, 79 (15)-74 (3).

The Bees sit fifth, five points outside the top four, while Palm Lake sits second bottom.

In division 4, section 1, Point Cook snuck home against Maribyrnong Park.

Point Cook coming away with the win, 75 (15)-72 (3), while Werribee 3 had a big win against Melton 3, 96 (16)-58 (2).
