Werribee is yet to feel the impact of so many quality defections in the Bowls Victoria off season.
When the Bees lost all four skips to a higher level in the winter, some feared the top side might struggle, particularly in the transition period early in the division 1 season. But those worries have been unfounded as the Bees have banded together two wins from two starts.
The positive vibes continued for Werribee with an 86-80 win over Fitzroy Victoria away on Saturday.
“It was another great effort by the division 1 pennant side,” Werribee committee chairperson Steve Weston said.
“Having to travel to Fitzroy-Victoria was going to be another tough ask, but led by a great pre-match motivational chat by skip Peter Williams … the four rinks started well and never was really challenged with only one rink down for the day.”
The most nail-biting rink on the day was that of Peter Yasser. Yasser picked up seven on the last end for a one shot win.
Williams also enjoyed a thrilling last end win, getting up by three shots. Graeme McNaughton was in front all day for a comfortable four-shot win, while Rob Smith went down by two.
The surprise packet, Werribee is perched on top of the ladder after two rounds, one point clear of Glenroy. The Bees will travel to Brunswick in search of a hat-trick of wins.
In division 2, Hoppers has made an impressive start to the season, winning its opening two matches.
Hoppers hammered Essendon (3) 108-51 at Windy Hill to collect 16 of a possible 18 points.
There are two remaining undefeated sides in division 2, but that will shrink to one come 5pm on Saturday with Hoppers hosting first-placed Altona Sports on Saturday.
In division 5, Palm Lake is off to a roaring start too, winning both of its opening two games. The Lakers took care of Keilor (3) 83-61 away on Saturday.
Point Cook Village could not back up its first round win, going down 82-70 to St Albans.
