Westbourne pull the pin

Westbourne Grammarians won’t field sides this season in the Victorian Amateur Football Association this season.

The Grammarians announced on social media on Thursday that they didn’t have the numbers to field a senior side this season.

“It is with regret that we announce the decision to not field any teams in the VAFA for the 2023 season,” the announcement said.

“Despite our best efforts it has become apparent that we are not going to have enough players to field a senior side that will survive the entire season.

“We want to express our gratitude to the players, coaches and committee for their hard work and dedication to the club over the past five months.

“We understand the commitment and sacrifice that everyone has made and we are truly grateful for your efforts.”

The senior side was set to play in the senior thirds competition, playing against other club’s third open age side.

The decision was made by the VAFA on the basis of allowing the club to rebuild and recruit with the hope of returning to senior football in 2024.

The side failed to win a game in division 3 last season and was originally going to play in division 4 this season.

In a further blow to the Grammarians, the planned under-19 program with the Newport Power junior club will not go ahead this season either.

“We will use the coming 12 months to regroup and work with all our stakeholders in the hope to restarting the Grammarians football programs in 2024,” the club’s post said.
