Werribee’s demolition job

Werribee was dominant from start to finish in an 83-point dismantling of Frankston in the Victorian Football League at Skybus Stadium on Sunday.

In the clash of two stand-alone sides, Werribee had it all its own way, kicking no fewer than five goals in each of the four quarters.

Max Augerinos, who returned to the Werribee line-up for the first time after a knee reconstruction, praised his side’s attention to detail.

“It was a pretty emphatic win,” he said.

“It stems down to everyone focusing on what they had to bring for the team and what they had to do.

“It was about being a pressure team and just building from there.

“We just did all the little things right.”

The most pleasing aspect for Werribee was its total 120 minute effort.

The side has shown that its best is good enough to compete with any team in the competition, but it was a matter of sustaining the effort over the course of a game.

There could be no question marks about that on this occasion as they put it all together for the full match.

“We’ve played some seriously good footy this season, but just a bit too patchy,” Augerinos said.

“That’s something we can take from this game, that we can do it for four quarters.

“We knew that we could but now we’ve done it.

“I think each week we’re growing and moulding together as a team and it’s looking very exciting for the future.”

Rookie Joel Bennett had the outing of his career.

Playing in a pressuring role in the forward line, Bennett not only adhered to the team disciplines, but got on the end of a number of plays to finish with a bag of six goals.

“He was playing up forward for the day and worked really hard and got rewarded, which was great to see,” Augerinos said.

Joe Maishman capped a best-on-ground performance for Werribee with four goals.

Sam Collins was again the general down back with his intercept marking a feature.

Andrew Hooper, Nick Coughlan and Josh Porter booted two goals apiece.

Werribee will face growing rivals Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday at 11am, keen to atone for its narrow four-point loss back in round one.

“I was there watching that game and it still stings me from just watching it,” Augerinos said.

“I think a lot of the guys are real keen to make amends for that and put our best foot forward against a strong Geelong side.”
