Werribee is only just clinging to a spot in the Victorian Football League top eight.

The Tigers were handsomely beaten for a second week in a row, going down to top-of-the-ladder Box Hill Hawks by 45 points at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.

It leaves the Tigers a mere 0.55 per cent above ninth-placed Sandringham, though the Tigers do have the benefit of a game in hand.

Werribee started the game well, kicking the first goal through Josh Corbett, but Box Hill replied with the next three and was never headed from that point on.

The Tigers were still in the contest at half-time, but it turned pear shaped in the third, as Box Hill out-scored them 4.9 to 2.1 to lead by an unassailable 43 points.

Two goals apiece in the final term ensured no further damage was done to Werribee’s percentage, which could be vital when it gets to deciding a spot in the final eight next month.

Rookie Dom Brew was at the forefront of all that was good for Werribee.

The young midfielder continues to show he belongs, racking up 23 possessions and 15 tackles.

Matt Hanson, with 27 disposals and nine tackles, captain Michael Sodomaco, with 22 possessions and 10 tackles, and defender Ryley Barrack, with 16 disposals and five marks, performed admirably for the Tigers.

Todd Goldstein had 52 hit outs in his first game since being omitted by North Melbourne.

Corbett was the Tigers main focal point with 12 possessions, seven marks and two goals. Small forward Lindsay Thomas was Werribee’s only other multiple goalkicker with two.

Werribee will travel to Rams Arena in Craigieburn for a ‘home’ game against high flying Port Melbourne on Sunday.

In the AFL Victoria development league, Werribee was comprehensively beaten by Box Hill Hawks to the tune of 119 points.

Kurt Aylett, Nick Buykx and Jake Edwards were named best for the Tigers.
