Werribee defender Sam Collins will restart his AFL career on the Gold Coast, with the Suns signing the mature-age VFL prospect.
Collins, 24, enjoyed a stellar year with Werribee after being delisted by Fremantle after 14 games at the end of 2017.
The Suns picked Collins with their final signing under special dispensation rules afforded to them and Carlton.
It follows the signings last week of fellow Werribee player Josh Corbett and SANFL key position player Chris Burgess.
Collins starred in defence for Werribee this year, establishing himself as one of the best key defenders in the league and the most prolific mark in the competition.
He took out the Werribee best and fairest and also finished third in the league’s JJ Liston Trophy.
Speaking to the AFL’s trade radio, Collins said he hoped he could carve out a regular spot in the Suns’ best team, likening himself to triple All-Australian Jeremy McGovern in the way he operates down back.
“I like to try and roll off (my opponent) and mark the ball,” the 194-centimetre defender said.
“The obvious one is Jeremy McGovern – he does it so well from the Eagles.
“That’s probably the player I am – not too flashy, but just a competitor who likes to mark the ball.”
Collins has been on the Suns’ radar for some time, with head coach Stuart Dew among staff and recruiters watching his games throughout 2018.
Suns general manger of list and strategy Craig Cameron said Collins would give the club some more defensive depth.
“We’re excited to be able to announce Sam as our final state-league player,” he said.
“Sam has really impressed us with his form, has great character and is excited to help drive our young club forward.
“The special assistance provided by the AFL allows us to maintain a strong hand at the draft, to secure top end talent, but also allows us to add much needed experience to our list in 2019.”
The signing follows that of Corbett last week.
The young forward booted 22 goals and averaged 7.6 goals a game in his nine games for Werribee this season, earning the VFL most promising young player medal.
Corbett told the Suns’ website he was excited to be starting his AFL journey.
“Obviously, it’s a childhood dream for every young boy and I’m just absolutely stoked and so grateful to the Gold Coast Suns for giving me the opportunity,” Corbett said.
“I know there’s going to be a lot of hard work involved, but I’m confident with my ability as a footballer and in my communication.
“I enjoy working hard and working towards a common goal and I think that seems to be a common theme throughout the Gold Coast staff and players.
“I can’t wait to get up there and meet more of the boys and get into it all.”
