Times have been tough for Werribee in Bowls Victoria division 1 this season.
That makes it all the more sweeter for the Bees when they register a win.
The Bees claimed their second in eight games on Saturday when they took down Sunbury 81 (16)-70 (2) at Chirnside Park.
It was just what the doctor ordered to breathe some life into Werribee’s top side.
“It was a good win,” Bees skip Snowy Barker said. “They’d been going all right, Sunbury, but we mixed our sides up a bit and it went OK. Everyone was happy just to get a win. It gives us a bit of breathing space [from the relegation zone] and keeps us competitive down there.”
Werribee was impressive in disposing of Sunbury.
In a consistent display across the board, the Bees claimed three of the four rinks with Rob Panton finishing up six, while Barker and Mick O’Neil were both plus-four.
Could this be a turning point in Werribee’s season?
Saturday’s trip to Essendon, a side that is sitting two spots above the Bees on the ladder, will provide a good indication.
The Bombers have also been up and down this season, but they are going in with winning form after upsetting high-flying Deer Park last start. It is a must-win for both sides if they are to get back into the finals mix.
“We’re not taking them lightly,” Barker said. “They’re going to be a formidable opponent there after their win last week, so we’ll have to play at our best.
“Our win put confidence in ourselves that we can play a reasonably competitive game.
“The strength of our side and quality of the players is not like we’ve had in the past, but we can still be confident.”
In Werribee’s men’s singles championships on Sunday, Barker went down to Panton 25-17 in a hard-fought final.
“He played very well and it was a thoroughly deserved win,” Barker said.
In division 3, Hoppers Crossing sunk to a 78 (14)-58 (4) loss to Yarraville-Footscray, leaving it in third place on the ladder.
Hoppers will be aiming to get back on track when it hosts a one-win Melton side on Saturday.
