The Werribee Giants’ bid for automatic promotion in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 took a dramatic turn for the worse on Saturday when they were blanked by Upwey-Ferntree Gully on their home diamond at President’s Park.
The Giants were soundly beaten 5-0 – a loss that could not have come at a worse time.
Not only did it snap the Giants’ four-game winning streak, it saw them dislodged from the top of the ladder by Sunshine, which has been in red hot form in the new year.
Having been on top for the past three weeks, the Giants will now have to find a way to topple Sunshine.
The good news is that Werribee has three games in which to find a solution – and one of those games is against Sunshine in the final round.
But the Giants need to take care of business in the meantime, starting with a tricky road trip to mid-table Berwick on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Melbourne Aces did not get the fairytale finish they were after in the Australian Baseball League.
The Aces suffered a 2-0 series sweep at the hands of the Brisbane Bandits in a best-of-three grand final series at Melbourne Ballpark at the weekend.
Gunning for back-to-back titles, the Bandits made the perfect start to the series by winning game one 6-2 on Friday night, then clinched the title with a 3-1 win on Saturday night.
