Werribee Devils sank to a predictable 93-70 defeat to Mildura Heat in the Big V basketball women’s division 1 at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night.
It has been a struggle for the Devils in the opening six rounds with a dismal 1-5 record, while the visiting Heat have been the total contrast with a 4-1 start.
The script remained the same with the Heat extending their lead at every break to run out comfortable winners.
After an inefficient first half, Werribee found its groove on the offensive end in the third quarter, adding some respectability to the scoreboard. Jessica Slade provided the Devils’ spark, finishing with 22 points and 21 rebounds, but it was all to no avail.
Jacqui Silcock added 18 points, including two three-pointers, while Nicole Greene scored 17.
But the Devils were dreadful from the foul line, shooting seven-from-20.
They couldn’t supplement those lost points through long-range shooting either, as they made only three three-pointers for the game, compared with Mildura’s nine.
The Devils will face the Hawthorn Magic (2-4) at the Boroondara Sports Complex on Sunday.
In the men’s championship, Werribee Devils claimed their second win of the season, beating Whittlesea Pacers comfortably, 89-69, at Eagle Stadium on Sunday.
Devils import Fred Hunter was a huge help with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
Jack McDonald was at his efficient best with 23 points on 10-from-16 shooting to go with five assists.
The Devils will travel to Eltham Wildcats (0-6) on Saturday night before playing Corio Bay Stingrays (6-1) at Eagle Stadium on Sunday.
