Werribee City Football Club opens Indigenous scholarships

Werribee City Football Club wants new young blood.

The soccer club has launched its Indigenous scholarship program, and will cover the costs of National Premier League fees, supply uniforms, and arrange transport for two successful applicants each year.

WCFC operations manager Carmine Camerlengo said the club is keen to choose a boy and a girl each year for the scholarship, with selection trials due late October or early November.

“What we’re attempting to do is engage with our broader community,” Mr Camerlengo said.

“The costs of kids playing is really expensive – up to a couple of grand per kid.

“We know there are some people in the community who can’t really afford that.

“We’d like to start somewhere and I thought somewhere could be the local Indigenous people.

“It’s not just about football, it’s about us opening our doors, so that we can meet people from other communities.”

The club has a number of junior boys teams, starting from under 9s to under 20s, as well as under 14 and under 20 girls’ teams and open age teams.

WCFC will launch the scholarship program at a fundraising lunch on October 14 at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee. Guest speakers include John Moriarty, Danny Tiatto and Travis Dodd.
