Top spot pursuit for Werribee Giants

Werribee Giants have struck rich form over the past week in Baseball Victoria’s summer league division 2.

The Giants displayed their premiership credentials in an 8-1 mauling of Berwick City Cougars at Presidents Park on Saturday.

It followed on from their hard-fought 4-2 midweek win over Bonbeach Bluejays at the Melbourne Ball Park on Wednesday.

“The players are coming good at the right time,” Giants president Ben Bavdek told Star Weekly.

The Giants have all but secured their finals berth.

With eight rounds to go, the second-placed Giants have a 15-4 record and continue to maintain the pressure on ladder leader Moorabbin Panthers, who are a game ahead with a game in hand. A huge boost for the Giants was the return from injury of starting pitcher Tayler Rowe, who looked strong against the Cougars.

The Giants will face Ballarat Brewers in an 8.30 game at Melbourne Ballpark tomorrow night, followed by a trip to Bonbeach on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Werribee has fallen from second to fourth in the women’s division 2.

The Giants were leap-frogged by Doncaster, which beat them 8-7 in a thriller at Presidents Park on Saturday.

Sitting five games clear in fourth, the Giants’ place in the top four is not under immediate threat, but they can hammer another nail in the coffin of fifth-placed Footscray when the sides meet at Melbourne Ballpark tonight at 6.
