‘Tight contest’ for Tigers

The Werribee Districts are one step closer to the Western Region FootbalL League grand final, after a close match against Hoppers Crossing on Sunday.

The Tigers beat The Warriors 13.14 (92) – 12.13 (85) after a tightly fought match.

At half time The Tigers were four goals behind, after a rough first two quarters, but managed to take the lead in the final quarter.

Werribee Districts coach Chris Gilham said he was “really pleased” that the team was able to make the big comeback by the end of the match.

“Even though at half time we were four goals down, we were able to stay in the contest and make a few changes,” Gilham said

“To fight our way back and get the result was really pleasing.”

Gilham said the difference was adjustments made at half time, that included positional changes and a different approach.

“We just wanted to be a bit more aggressive in our ball movement… We tried to get a bit of momentum,” he said.

Stand out players of the day included Trent Lee, who kicked the most goals on the team with six, and Lachlan Rainbow who kicked three.

“[Lee] really kept us in the game, he was able to keep the score ticking over and keep us in the game at half time,” Gilham said.

On Sunday, the Tigers will face off against Deer Park, a match that Gilham said he expected to be a “tight contest”.

“It’s something we’re looking forward to, we think we’ve got some areas of our play that can challenge them,” Gilham said.

“It’ll be a challenge for us but one we’ve got to take on and try to play our way… rock up and have a go.”
