Successful nationals for Western Athletics

Two gold medals were the highlights for Western Athletics at the recent Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney.

The club had 17 athletes make the trip north to compete against the best athletes from across the country.

Olympian Amy Cashin won gold in the open women’s steeplechase to continue her good track form.

Xander Bryne claimed gold in the under-18 men’s hurdles in a time of 54.68 seconds. Byrne also won gold in the under-18 4 x 400 metres relay and finished fifth in the under-18 110 metre hurdles.

Liam Cashin, who raced just 15 minutes before his sister Amy in the 3000 metres steeplechase, claimed a breakthrough bronze medal with a massive personal best.

The steeplechase success continued for the Western Athletics team, with Abigail Thomas winning bronze in the under-20 women’s event.

Frankleen Newah-Jarfoi who competed in four events, won silver in the under-18 4 x 100 metres relay.

He finished fourth in the 100 metres and 200 metres, and 12th in the long jump.

Ella Tobin won bronze in the under-20 4 x 400 metre relay, while Brayden Portelli won bronze in the 4 x 100 metres open men’s relay.

Overall, Western Athletics athletes’ won four individual medals, four relay medals and finished with a total of 14 top eight finishes.

Club president Peter Cashin said it was a very successful event.

Among the other athletes who competed, were Aliyah Canepa, Matt Hussey, Ella Tobin, Liz Hall, Honour Tobin and Jayden Nti who all had top eight finishes.
