Sports shorts: Werribee breaks duck

Hockey

Werribee enjoyed a win in the Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 2. The Tigers breakthrough win came in a tight 3-2 contest over Melbourne University at President’s Park on Saturday. Casey Tunstall scored a double for the Tigers, while Lisa Ross also found the back of the net. It was a reverse scoreline for Werribee’s men’s Vic League 2 side, which lost 3-2 to Monash University, despite goals to Sam Huxtable and Jamie Beamish. It was the Tigers first loss of the campaign.

GDFL netball

Werribee Centrals scraped home by the skin of their teeth in a 45-44 win over Inverleigh in the GDFL netball on Saturday. It was the Centurions toughest test of the season so far and the late triumph ensured their unbeaten record stayed intact. Melissa Prismall, Prudence O’Mahony and Ellie Tubbs were the key contributors for the Centurions. Tubbs scored 39 goals for the Centurions, who share top spot with Bannockburn.

GDFL football

Werribee Centrals had no answer to undefeated top-of-the-ladder Inverleigh in the GDFL football at Inverleigh Reserve on Saturday. The Centurions were competitive for a quarter before it all fell apart in a 61-point loss. Dion Lawson was the Centurions stand-out and was one of three players who kicked two goals, along with Cameron Wilson and Shayne Killender. The Centurions are second-last with a 1-4 record and host Corio in a must-win game at Galvin Park on Saturday.

WRFL

The Western Region Football League has named its 53-man squad to take on the Ballarat Football League in next month’s AFL Victoria Community Challenge game. The bulk of the squad has been extracted from division 1 clubs, but Glen Orden’s Josh MacDonald has been named after impressing over a long period in the second division. Of the Wyndham clubs, Hoppers Crossing has the greatest representation with seven players named.
