Poor away form stings Werribee Bees

Werribee is crying out for consistency in Bowls Victoria division 1.

The Bees have been up and down in the opening five rounds and find themselves on the lower rungs of the ladder.

Of particular concern is their road form – they are yet to win in three attempts away from the Hive.

Bees skip Snowy Barker lamented a lack of mental application after Saturday’s 83-76 loss on their visit to Deer Park.

The Bees started well and led at the halfway mark, only to fall away towards the end.

“We beat ourselves today,” he said. “We were up at half-time but it’s about mentally being able to do it all day. We lost our way somewhere along the line and only ended up with one rink up.

“We can’t be happy with that result and we’re not going to be. We’ve just got to win away – we’ve got to get it right.”

Barker’s rink was the only one to salute for the Bees. Even that rink has endured its share of ups and down in recent weeks.

Barker was not interested in discussing his rink’s performance.

“I was engrossed by the overall score,” he said. “It’s a team game.”

The Bees were considered genuine finals contenders but they are well off the pace in eighth spot with just two wins from five starts. The league-wide bye this weekend for the Victorian Open may have come at the right time for individuals facing the chop from the top side, though Barker is not so sure it will make a difference.

“There are going to be repercussions this week,” he said.

Hoppers played a thriller with Keilor in division 2 before going down 78-75.

The week off in the draw will give one-win Hoppers a chance to re-group after a slow start to the season.
