Three times Point Cook fell behind Newmarket Phoenix – but each time its never-say-die attitude came to the fore.
The Jets secured a memorable 5-4 win in a thriller in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday.
Jets coach Craig Filer gave full credit to his players.
“To come back three times shows we’ve got a bit of endeavour about us and a bit of want,” he said.
Point Cook was severely undermanned, particularly in defence.
From the moment Filer settled on his playing squad, he was happy to spruik the depth on his roster and this was a chance to see if it could stand up without a number of first-team regulars.
The players did not let him down, picking up the team’s first victory of the season.
“With the signings we made in the pre-season, we wanted a bit more depth and it’s proved invaluable,” Filer said. “Players are stepping up and being counted.”
Dale Howarth is proving a shrewd acquisition for the Jets. The striker, who has played in the top division of Welsh football, has scored four goals in three games – including two against the Phoenix.
Kyle Caruana, Zac Osborne and Matthew Lawty also found the back of the net for the Jets.
Meanwhile, Truganina Hornets suffered a 2-0 defeat to Balmoral at Balmoral Park on Saturday night.
In state league 2 north-west, Hoppers Crossing beat Sunbury United 1-0 after a goal to Daniel Sweeney.
In the NPL, Werribee City remains stuck on the bottom of the ladder after a narrow 1-0 loss to Moreland City.
